1234 Market St – 19th Floor Renovations

The 19th Floor serves as a command center for a tenant, with 24-hour equipment monitoring. The air-cooled chillers on the roof had reached the end of their useful life and needed to be replaced, along with the comfort cooling units throughout the entire 19th floor.

Because of site constraints, the chillers could only be replaced using a helicopter. This had to be done during the winter while still maintaining 24-hour operations on the 19th floor. The challenge was heightened because the lift had to occur while the Christmas Village and Ice Rink were active at City Hall. Cooling was maintained throughout the project by keeping one of the three chillers running before, during, and after the helicopter lift. Similarly, the work on the 19th floor was completed in multiple phases, replacing the air conditioning and heating units area by area, while ensuring uninterrupted 24-hour operation of the space.
