1600 Market Street: Three Cooling Towers Replaced by Helicopter
Herman Goldner Company replaced three cooling towers on the roof of 1600 Market Street in Center City Philadelphia, with work running from the fall of 2018 into the spring of 2019. The scope included one cooling tower on the building’s high roof and two larger towers that had to be threaded down from the high roof and set onto the lower roof, a full story below.
Neither the high roof nor the low roof at 1600 Market has parapet walls. Before any equipment moved, Goldner installed temporary protection and set up safety zones so every worker on both roof levels was protected throughout the project.
The smaller tower on the high roof was easily reached by the helicopter, but the two larger towers needed to be lowered a full story to their final positions. Working with Erickson Air Crane and Thackray Crane, Goldner’s crew had to be very precise, making sure each load did not drift into the adjacent walls and that it sat down perfectly on the supporting steel.
The project went smoothly, and the building experienced only a short period without cooling.
