1600 Market Street: Boiler Replacement by Crane

Herman Goldner Company completed a complex high-rise boiler replacement project at 1600 Market Street in Philadelphia, coordinating a highly technical crane lift and rigging operation nearly 300 feet above street level. The project required extensive planning, engineering coordination, street and site logistics, and precise communication between Goldner’s construction team and Thackray Crane Co.

Working from the upper floors of the building, Goldner utilized an overhead gantry trolley system, chain falls, hoists, steel supports, and carefully prepared floor plating and shimming to safely maneuver the existing boiler for removal. The equipment was transferred across the elevated work area with controlled load movements before being secured to the crane and lowered safely to the ground. Every stage of the operation required careful attention to load positioning, elevation changes, lateral movement, crane signaling, and communication between crews.

Safety remained a priority throughout the operation, with full PPE, fall protection systems, tethered tools, and clearly established communication and command procedures in place. Goldner’s field leadership and tradespeople worked closely with Thackray Crane to execute the lift safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

The project continued Herman Goldner’s longstanding history at 1600 Market Street. Over more than two decades, the company has supported multiple major equipment lifts at the property, including boilers, chillers, and cooling towers using both cranes and helicopters. That experience, combined with detailed planning and coordination, allowed the latest boiler replacement to move forward smoothly and positioned the building to restore its boiler plant in preparation for the upcoming heating season.
